15.3.2015: Indian-American Renu Khator is appointed as the chairperson of American Education Council. She is presently working as chancellor of Houston System University. She was the vice chairman of American Education Council and will take charge of new position. Born in Uttar Pradesh, she is the first woman to be appointed as a chancellor for University of Houston.

Narayan Desai, Noted Gandhian is No More

15.3.2015: Narayan Desai noted Gandhian passed away at the age of 90. Narayan was brought up at Sabarmati Ashram. His father was the personal secretary of Mahatma Gandhi. He served as chancellor for Gujarat Vidyapith. Narayan won many awards including Sahitya Akademi Award, UNESCO-Madanjeeeth Singh Prize, Jamnalal Bajaj award, Ranjitram Suwarna Chanrak Gujarat literature award and Moortidevi award.

Kidambi Srikanth is the winner of Swiss Open Grand Prix Gold 2015

15.3.2015: Kidambi Srikanth became the first Indian to win the prestigious Swiss Open Grand Prix Gold title. The ace shuttler defeated Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen by 20-15, 12.-21 and 21-14 to win the 2015 title. The title carries $120,000 cash prize. China’s Sun Yu won the women’ singles title and China team also won the men’s and Women’s doubles title.

69th Santosh Trophy Football Title won by Services

15.3.2015: the 69th Santos Trophy football title for the year 2014-2015 is won by services. In a match played at Guru Nanak stadium, Ludhiana, Services defeated the Punjab team. Services won the trophy in 1961, 2012 and 2013 also. Santosh Trophy was founded in 1941 and is named after late Maharaja Sir Manmatha Nath Roy Chowdhary of Santosh. This is the annual Indian football tournament.

NDRI Clones the first Calf Apurva from Stomatic Cells Isolated from Buffalao’s Urine

15.3.2015: National Dairy Research Institute cloned a female calf using somatic cells from buffalo urine. The calf is named Apurva. This is the tenth calf cloned by NDRI and the first to be produced from somatic cells isolated from urine. The first calf was cloned by NDRI in 2009. Among the 10 calves produced, three were dead.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi Flagged off a New Train Service in Sri Lanka

15.3.2015: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off a new train service from Thaliamannar to Madhu Road in northern Sri Lanka. This is a new train service in the Northern Railway Line reconstruction project which is being taken up by Indian Railways Construction Company Limited. The line track is 63 km long and is the dream of lakhs of Tamil people to have a direct train service to Colombo.
