Why BJP Inclined For Poll Alliance With TDP In AP?

Despite many pre-poll surveys indicating increasing popularity for BJP and NDA, the party is more interested for pre-poll alliance with TDP in the state of AP.

Hyderabad: As a part of its effort to improve its projected wins in the coming Lok Sabha elections, BJP concluded pre-poll alliance with TDP. This alliance is for the entire state of AP (Seemandhra & Telangana as well) and the seat sharing is for the total of 17 MP & 119 MLA in Telangana as that of 25 MP & 175 MLA in Seemandhra region.

BJP’s telangana leadership suggested facing the elections on its own, wheras seemandhra division of the BJP strongly recommended the poll alliance. To coordinate suggestions of both the divisions, central leadership of BJP wanted an alliance in the complete state and their first preference has been to go with TDP.

In view of the alliance, there was dissidence in both the parties. At some point of time, the difference reached a flash point where the alliance was expected to break. Even Chandrababu confirmed that there is no alliance in Seemandhra while the alliance continues in Telangana, as per some reports in the press.

But the BJP leadership tried and continued the alliance. In the revised negotiations, BJP sacrificed some more MLA seats to TDP. This kind of behavior from BJP is strange in view of the fact the party is expected to perform exceedingly well and might be in a position to form the government on its own. The reasons for BJP sticking to the alliance are not new.

  • TDP was an active partner in NDA I (under Vajpayee’s administration) with 33 MPs. Even with that much larger number of MPs’ TDP required no ministry but the LS speaker (in the name of GMC Balayogi).
  • TDP’s supremo Naidu’s political acumen in coordinating the various partners in the alliance is well known even during earlier alliance.
  • Naidu’s strategic planning and vision are as good as that of Modi.
  • BJP as well as Modi are aware about the Naidu’s capability to attract foreign investments (as exhibited during his tenure as CM of the AP state)
  • At the local level, the strong local cadre base of TDP is a plus for BJP which want a full-fledged entry into the state of AP.

Now that the initial hic-ups in relation to the alliance have been sorted out, both the parties need to prove their success in the election fray. Their joint working would be beneficial for state as well as centre.
