2014 General Elections in India – Expected Political Alliances

With the general elections around, now everyone in India is anxiously looking for the political alliances that are likely to take place in the next few days.

New Delhi: The present ruling UPA has not been able to find suitable PM candidate whereas the BJP led NDA has already announced Gujarat CM NaMo as their PM candidate and is very well ahead both in terms of canvassing as well as announcing their MP contestants. The party (till 9th March) has already announced candidates for 106 seats in 2 lists whereas the Congress announced candidates for 194 seats in 1 list.

While the names of the candidates are being announced now everyone is looking for political alliances in various states. The picture on alliances is still unclear. The survey results have been projecting the expected seat tally for NDA (184 in January 2013 & 212-232 in February 2014) and for UPA the projections are 128 & 119-139 during the same period. The February survey projected congress tally at 94-110 whereas BJP’s tally stands at 193-213. The latest survey confirms that while the NDA improved its position the UPA has been steadily losing. However, the survey report leaves almost 172 seats (543-371) for others which can become more important for the government formation in the next LS.

The leading contributors to LS are UP (80), MH (48), WB (42), AP (42), Bihar (40) & TN (39). UP has been seeing a four-party contest between BJP, SP, BJP & Congress to certain extent, whereas MH is predominantly managed by local parties NCP & Shiv Sena (forming part of UPA & NDA respectively), WB (TMC & Communists), AP (congress, TDP, TRS & YSRCP), Bihar (JD U & RJD), TN (by regional parties DMK & AIADMK).

If the recent elections (November 2013) are any indications, the position of BJP is far better in states of MP, Rajasthan, Delhi & Chhattisgarh. These 4 states contribute 72 MPs which is very phenomenal and important for the magic figure of 272 for the new government formation. The contribution by TDP, YSRCP, TRS (AP) as also by DMK & ADMK (TN), by NCP & Shiv Sena (MH), TMC (WB) will in another way decide the position regarding 171 MP seats.
