Modi Wave Has Its Limitations

Narendra Modi has been able to influence voters of India, but with certain exceptions.

New Delhi: The BJP PM candidate Narendra Modi conducted massive election campaign. He has been able to get the historical victory for the BJP party and also the NDA as well. Under NaMo’s campaign, the party has been able to record the highest victory for party.

The scale of this victory is so high that there is no opposition in the Lok Sabha and as correctly mentioned by Modi, previously there was alliance to form government at Centre whereas now the alliance is required for getting opposition designation. (Opposition is a designation given to the highest party other than the ruling party that gets 10% of the total seats. Accordingly, the 16th Lok Sabha needs to have 54 members from any single party or alliance for it to claim opposition designation).

With the extraordinary win by NDA, congress has been restricted to 47 seats which is below the 10% formula as above i.e., 55 seats. The other big wins are recorded by Jayalalithaa’s AIADMK (37 seats) and Mamata Banerjee’s All India Trinamool Congress (34 seats).

Despite the huge victory achieved by NDA, there is an interesting aspect to observe.

The opposition ruled governments in many states escaped the Modi Wave. Tamil Nadu with Jayalalithaa as CM gave 37 out of 39 MP seats to the party and there is no Modi-wave. Immediately followed on the same footsteps is West Bengal with Mamata Banerjee as CM. Her All India Trinamool Congress won 34 MP seats.

Similarly, Odisha also escaped the Modi Wave. The Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik (from BJD party) registered third consecutive win for the party in the state assembly and Lok Sabha seats as well. The party won 115 out of total 147 MLA seats. This is an increase of 12 seats compared to existing strength. Similarly the BJD won 20 out of 21 MP seats. This is an increase of 6 seats from the existing strength. This gave the remaining single seat to BJP.

Impact of Modi Wave in new state of the country i.e., Telangana also appeared very low. This state is having 17 MP seats and the new regional party in this state i.e, TRS won 11 seats whereas BJP won only in one seat and its alliance partner TDP another seat.

The Andhra Pradesh state gave the BJP just 2 seats out of total 25 MP seats. TDP (alliance partner of BJP) won another 15 MP seats leaving the balance to another regional party in the region i.e., YSRCP.
