Elections 2014: Why KCR Contesting Both Assembly & Parliament Seats

Almost all the major parties are practicing one common rule in the elections. The leaders are contesting for both assembly & Lok Sabha wherever there are simultaneous elections.

Hyderabad: AP is facing elections for state assembly & Lok Sabha simultaneously. Post split, Telangana region will elect 119 MLA & 17 MP whereas the Seemandhra region will have 175 MLA & 25 MP.

TRS chief KCR filed his nominations for Gazvel assembly as well as Medak MP in the general elections 2014. Being the chief of the regional party, he is fighting for both the seats on TRS ticket.

Another regional party in AP, i.e., YSRCP is also applying similar rule. Its president YS Jagan is contesting for MLA seat whereas his mother YS Vijayamma is seeking election as MP.

This kind of contest (for both assembly & Lok Sabha) is a unique situation. By such contests, the message that the people get is totally different.

In one way it is to be treated as ‘accommodation of party candidates as per capacity to win’. On the other hand, it also indicates that those candidates are in dual mind whether to stick to state politics or to move to centre.

To cash the popularity that the TRS is enjoying in Telangana (people believe that TRS is instrumental in Telangana formation), KCR wanted to control the new state and it is believed that he is contesting assembly only with this intention. His contest to Lok Sabha is looked as his effort to play important role in the centre (depending on the outcome of this general election). In case if he wins both the seats for which he is contesting, he can retain either one of them and he has to relinquish the other.

Coming to YSRCP issue, even if both the MLA & MP seats are won by YSRCP candidates (Jagan & his mother respectively), there might not be a re-election as they can continue in their positions. It is interesting to note that at present YS Jagan is MP and YS Vijayamma an MLA.

YSRCP feat is repeated by G Vivek & his brother G Vinod (in Karimnagar district) and also Komatireddy brothers (in Nalgonda district)
