India Will Be Behind China in Software Services: China is Ahead of India in e-Commerce Segment Also

India’s superiority in sector of software professionals is going to be short lived in view of the steps taken by China. Like India, China also took steps to increase software professionals’ availability in the country and also through imparting English to their engineers.

Delhi: Till recently, the general belief is that India has been able to offer better software professionals. Now with the steps that China had taken, it is no longer that China will overtake India in this sector as well. As on date, software professionals is the only sector where India is ahead of China. The software services include software developers, skilled IT workers etc. The software sector include IT, IT enabled services, the e-commerce, b2b & b2c.

A comparison between India & China in relation to economic terms confirms that China ‘opened-up’ during mid 80’s whereas India opened up early 90’s. However, the fruits of liberalisation by India have not been encouraging whereas China has been able to improve its standard of living, the GDP and excelled in every aspect of financial planning, far surpassing India. China’s purchasing power party is 3 times that of India’s today. The only sector where India has been able to maintain its superiority is in its world-class software services sector, mostly encouraged by the Indian government since 2000. India has always been treated as one of the best sources for reliable source for procuring software professionals by entire world. This superiority became possible with the measures taken by government of India as well as other state governments in the country to encourage IT & software related courses and promotion of employment in this sector.

However, this technical superiority in software professional sector by India over China is going to be short-lived as per a recent report from IDC. According to the report, China has nosed ahead of India in supply of software professionals by promoting various IT and IT related courses and employability in these segments. Presently US houses 19% of the global software developers including professionals and hobbyists, China 10% and India 9.8%. This comparative figure shows that China had to rapidly scale the pool of software professionals and focussing on teaching English to its engineers is another factor for these improved figures. Seeing the development China made in software sector, many global software service firms as well as product companies are very keen to set up development centres in that country.

Other area where China is moving ahead of India is in the e-commerce segment. The only limitation for China to overtake India in software sector is excellence in project management, business analysis, and general exposure to processes and systems. But as seen in the past regarding China’s commitment for all round development, this limitation would also be easily overcome by China.

What corrective steps India will take is yet to be seen.
