HTC Likely to Release Nexus Tablet?: No Official Confirmation from HTC

HTC will release a high-end Nexus tablet in the third quarter of 2014, according to The Commercial Times. No sources were quoted by the publication which claimed that HTC has acquired the rights to create a Nexus tablet with premium specs. The company declined to comment when enquired by Pocket.lint.

Taipei: HTC was the first manufacturer to develop a Nexus smart phone in 2010 called Nexus One. It released two tablets in 2011, HTC Flyer and HTC Jetstream which did not fare well. Cher Wang, a HTC chairperson revealed in an interview during October last that it would soon enter tablet space and come out with “something nice and disruptive”. At present Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 are the only Nexus tablets available in the market. If HTC were to introduce similar high-end tablets it could be a hit.

In October last, HTC hinted at future plans of delivering new products. However, the HTC heads did not comment on rumors of a HTC-Amazon smart phone. They said the company was open-minded but cannot talk of plans and partnerships. As for innovation, they hinted at another entry into tablet space and wearable technology.

HTC Chief Executive Officer Peter Chou claimed that HTC and Microsoft paired to work on a smart watch several years ago. As wearables have less demand, HTC was thinking of dabbling in the mobile sector, he said. The company is likely to return to tablet space after the flop of HTC Flyer and HTC Jetstream. This according to some is wishful thinking as the company is not up to competing with Samsung, has gone in to a slump and has less to spend on marketing. Chou however optimized that HTC being a small company can survive hopefully with 15 per cent market share of smart phones.

HTC has two tablets to its credit: A 7-inch Gingerbread powered HTC Flyer and the new 10-inch Honeycomb powered HTC Jetstream. The latter’s WXGA HD display is bright and crisp but by no means stunning. The sides have a simple power button LED light and headphone socket on the top and a micro USB charging port at the bottom.

The rear offers more stuff like an 8-megapixel camera and a speaker. It has a 1.5 GHz Snapdragon dual core processor and LTE/HSPA connectivity. It will also support 1080p playback and capture. It has friendly Sense UI interface.
