Sony SmartWatch vs Samsung Galaxy Gear: The First Tech War For The Wrist

Sony’s latest product, the SmartWatch 2 has a attractive outlook embed with plenty of apps and posses a water resistant surface. On the other hand Samsung Galaxy Gear with a Android OS powered by 800MHz heart, OLED screen and camera, is a solid contender too the Sony’s SW2.

London: Both of the wearable gadgets are new to the tech world and has a lot to offer. Lets look at them face to face so as to observe their potential to survive in the market:

Design: Similar to Sony’s first Smartwatch, the SW2 also uses a flexible silicon wristband for giving enough comfortable grip. The device is extremely light weight and attractively styled. The SW2 is 1.65 inches by 1.61 inches in dimension having a thickness of 0.35 inch. On the other hand Samsung Galaxy Gear measures 1.45 inch by 2.2 inch in dimension having a thickness of 0.44 inch. Undoubtedly Gear is larger and heavier than the Sony’s SmartWatch 2.

Display: Talking about the sheer size, Galaxy Gear leads the Sony SmartWatcg 2. With 1.63 inch OLED screen and a resolution of 320×320 pixels, the display produces good images with high contrast. Whereas the Sony’s Smartwatch 2 has a lower 220×176 pixels, however the screen is not that large.

UI: The touch UI, widgets and other basic capabilities does not have that great variation from the previous SmartWatch. SW2 lacks speaker and microphone so one has to use bluetooth headset.
Sony’s Smartwatch is compatible with not only Sony’s smartphone but various other android phones too but the new Samsung galaxy Gear is only compatible with the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 which is a serious letdown for buyers.

Battery: The First Sony’s smartwatch had a 3 to 4 days battery backup but hardly it managed to cross half the day. This time again they are claiming the same. Samsung pinned the Galaxy Gear’s life about 24 hours, well no info about the work load result.

Durability: Sony’s product were always being rugged portable and the company offers dust and water resistant in its smartphones section also, so no surprise. Its rated to IP57 international standard for ruggedness which can withstand fine particles and up to 3 feet dunked in water for 30 minutes without any issue. On other hand Galaxy Gear is designed on IP55 which protects the device from only sprays and not total immersion.

Overall i would say that the Samsung Galaxy Gear is better in various sections but the lack of its compatibility to other smartphones other than Note 3 is tough to accept when its price is expected to be on higher side. Somehow the Sony’s SmartWatch 2 gets ahead by a ounce but nothing can be concluded before the massive out of devices in the Market.
