Samsung Not Able To Stick To Its Price For Galaxy Gear For Indian Market

Samsung announced reduction in prices of its Galaxy Gear for the second time after its launch in November 2013. Reports indicate that the feature rich Galaxy Gear has some compatibility issues with some of the models of Samsung and also the competitor’s (Sony’s Smart Watch2) price is much below.

New Delhi: Being unable to maintain the price declared at launch, Samsung has reduced the price of Galaxy Gear for the 2nd time within two months of its launch. At the time of launch, the price was 22,000 and on 12th January 2014 there was reduction making the availability at Rs.19,075/- and now there is a further reduction of Rs.3785/-

Powered by Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean) operating system, it has a 1.6-inch Super AMOLED touch screen that is surrounded by stainless steel. Under the hood, it packs an 800MHz processor and 512MB RAM, along with 4GB internal storage. Its screen resolution is 320x320p and pixel density is 277ppi.As already reported, the Smart Watch has compatibility issues with most Samsung phones, with the exception of Note 3, Galaxy S4, S4 Mini and S3. The Galaxy Gear smart watch has a speaker and mic, along with a 1.9MP camera. The strap of this smart watch is made of metal and comes in six colours - Jet Black, Mocha Grey, Rose Gold, Wild Orange, Oatmeal Beige and Lime Green.

This smart watch can be used for 1) voice calls, 3) message & mails, 3) track workouts and capture photos and videos. It can also understand voice commands via the S Voice app. The 315mAh battery can last for over a day on a single charge. Some of the apps that come preinstalled on Samsung include Galaxy Gear are Auto Lock, Find My Device, Media Controller, Pedometer, eBay, Path and Line. Other apps available on the smart watch via the Samsung Apps menu are TripIt, Pocket, RunKeeper, Vivino Wine Scanner, Evernote, MyFitnessPal etc.

As on date, the reasons for the downward revision in prices are unknown, with this revision, the competitor ‘Sony’s Smartwatch 2’ (priced slightly under Rs.13000) is now within shooting distance. Though the reason for the downward revision of price is yet to be known, the outcome of the price revision will reflect in the increase in sales volumes.

Galaxy Smart WatchDespite the Gear fiasco, Samsung is working on its successordubbed the Galaxy Band in wearables. The Galaxy Band is supposed to be a fitness-focussed smart watch, unlike the kitchen-sink approach that the company has taken for the Gear.
