New Canon PowerShot G1X Camera may Include 20.2 Sensor

A new version of Canon’s PowerShot G1X high-end compact will be out soon, according to a Chinese forumXitek. Thetwo year old camera, G1X, will get a Mark II version, making a high-end camera option for users who want a small form-factor.

Tokyo: The new version is said to be similar in design to the original G1 X but offers a slightly longer lens. Users will see a 20.2-megapixel, 1.5-inch CMOS sensor, coupled with a 24-120mm f/2.8-5.8 lens and DIGIC 6-image processor to ensure photos come out crystal clear. The Mark II version will have the same 3-inch LCD touch screenwith 922,000 dots. What it means is customers will be getting better photos. The earlier version, Canon’s G1 X looks a lot like the older PowerShot G12, but has one crucial difference: a whopping-great 1.5-inch sensor size.

When it came to image quality what took the G1X to a new level is its brand new 14.1-megapixel marvel. Canon says this new sensor is built around the same technology as the EOS 600Ds, right down to the pixel size, meaning results should be just as good as that from a DSLR.

The 4x optical zoom lens covers a 28-112mm equivalent focal length and offers an f/2.8-5.6 aperture range. It’s nice and bright at the wide-angle setting and still fairly decent when shooting at the longer end of the zoom. The 1.5-inch sensor is quite simply sublime. The G1 X pulled out some that were just like those from a DSLR. The sensor itself is not much smaller than the APS-C sensor in the EOS 600D. The aspect ratio is 4:3 rather than 3:2 so it’s smaller in width and a little smaller in height overall.

Consider that the G1 X’s sensor is some 6.3-times larger than that in the G12 and it’s easy to see why its sensor pixel size and light-gathering capabilities are far better than almost any other compact.

Of course, nothing’s been confirmed by Canon. If all goes as planned, the company is expected to make a reveal at the CP+ show in Japan in February, 2014. No pricing has been named, but the last Powershot G1 X version went for 700, and Canon would not go too far off for its second version.
