Let us go into the history to find when Women’s day came into being. Industrialization started in 19th century and there was economic growth. But it also led to severe work pressure on people. Especially women were tired of doing work inside and outside their homes There used to be long working hours at office and very few holidays. All this naturally led to revolt. There were demands to reduce working hours and give one day holiday for week. Women’s day came into existence in this background. Thus this day is also celebrated as International working women’s day.

International women’s conference was held in Copenhegen in 1911. Women’s day was marked for the first time here. The day was proposed by Clara, a German but a date was not decided earlier.

In some countries International women’s day is an official holiday. There countries include Afghanistan, Azerbajjan, Armenia, China, Cuba, Moldova, Mongolia, Nepal, Russia, Uganda, Ukraine, Vietnam and Zambia. The day is celebrated by giving small presents to honor mothers, wives and girlfriends. All over the world achievements of women are celebrated.

India also celebrates international women’s day and various organizations try to bring awareness of rights in women. Every year the day is celebrated with a theme and this year’s theme is Time for action to end violence against women. Indian constitution gives equal rights to women and they are legal citizens of the country. Still women are struggling to get even good education. There are still some families in some section of society that consider daughter as a burden. They do not even send their girl child to school. Though situations are changing now, there is much to be done.

Though International Women’s day is marked for recognizing and respecting development of women in financial, political and social sectors, there are still women who are suffering in the society. There are women who are not able to take their own decisions, who cannot live independently. Real celebration will be then when every woman can enjoy her minimum rights.
