How Far Aam Aadmi Party Has To Travel To Reach Aam Aadmi In Delhi?

With the new government in power for the past one month or so, AAP has long way to fulfil its election commitments to people of Delhi. A look at ‘How Far Aam Aadmi Party has to travel to reach Aam aadmi in Delhi’?

Delhi: With clear manifesto for each of the 70 divisions in Delhi local assembly elections, the newly formed Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) could win 28 seats. When the largest single party the BJP with 32 MLA’s did not come forward to form the government, AAP leader Arvind Kezriwal gone back to Delhi voters and taken their ‘acceptance’ for forming a government with outside support from Congress.

During the election campaigns, AAP strongly criticized the policies of the then ruling congress party and also the chief minister Shiela Dixit. The criticism included the various scams involving the ruling congress along with the price rise (including government supply like water & electricity etc.)

Ignoring the election battle and the grounds thereof, AAP formed government in Delhi. As a new year gift, Kezriwal offered water concession for Delhi population, and also proposed to cut the electricity bill by 50% (for certain categories of users) – this is not reducing bill but only a subsidy type of adjustment.

Then started the conflict with Delhi Police (law & order department) and also the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (government supplies). On the former issue, Kezriwal had conducted some sit-in to protest the way the Delhi police reacted to some of the ‘instructions’ by AAP ministers. The issue is yet to be resolved. Meanwhile another law & order issue rose with death of Arunachal student in Delhi.

Clubbed with these problems, Kezriwal also is forced to fight with the DERC for its orders to increase power tariff by 6-8%. Reports are that the auditing of books of accounts of the distribution companies is pending.

In addition to solving these issues (to be taken with government of India), Kezriwal government is also required to attend to functions like - maintain civic facilities, improve standard of living, maintain Metro, improve administration, reduce corruption etc.

During the last one month or so of the new government, most of the time went for lesser constructive works and the new government has a long way to go for fulfilling its election commitments to Delhi people.
