High End Brand Fight : Samsung Galaxy S4vsSony Xperia Z

In this assessment we take the Sony Xperia Z and put it head to head with the latest device from Samsung’s ever increasing S4 range, the Samsung Galaxy S4.

Bangalore: With similar features and specs a natural comparison between these two devices is to be anticipated. It is really difficult to separate the two smartphones with a single decision, so this post attempts to make a buying conclusion easier for you by providing the necessary information in an easy to read format. The main differences at a glance:

  • Processor: One of the main differences between these two devices is the CPU. The Xperia Z has 1.5GHz, Snapdragon S4 Quad-Core processor. the S4 has a 1.6GHz Quad-Core processor. On the normal day the user would not notice a difference in overall performance with these two devices. Users who use their devices in a more difficult manner, e.g. multi-tasking and gaming, may see batter performance from the S4
  • RAM: Both devices have 2GB of RAM, as they both have parallel processing power there is very similar levels in overall performance. During test we noticed no real difference between the two devices in conditions of memory and performance.
Memory: Again, both devices have the same level of memory (16GB), however, it must be considered that the amount of memory the user has available can vary from the advertised amount. Both devices have an expandable memory slot capable of taking a 64GB MicroSD card in Samsung Galaxy S4 while Sony Xperia Z has 32 GB.
Display: These two displays actually are not possible to difference between both with 16M colors and 1080 x 1920 with 441 ppi. The only obvious difference is that the S4 Active is equipped with “Gorilla Glass 2”, where as the Xperia Z has “break proof and scratch-resistant glass” Means Gorilla Glass, Sony has Dragon trail and equivalent to Corning.
  • Camera: Now a very important aspect of a smart phone’s performance, the camera, and this set of images below illustrates the comparison between the two cameras visually. The Xperia Z does indeed have a very powerful camera, 13 MP. Admittedly I have spent less time using the S4 camera which is also 13 MP but it does seem to perform well, perhaps with not as much deepness as the Sony’s but it’s by no means a bad camera.
Battery: When it comes to battery the Samsung Galaxy S4 has the better hand. The Xperia Z has 2330mAh battery compared to the Samsung S4’s 2600mAh, another factor to consider is that the Samsung Galaxy S4’s battery is removable allow you to carry a fully charged battery
  • Size & Weight: The two devices very similar in terms of their footprint size, however the Xperia Z and Samsung Galaxy S4 both are 7.9mm thick. With regards to weight the Sony Xperia Z is 16g heavier at 146g, we did not notice a difference when we had the devices here, but then again, you wouldn’t notice a 16gm difference anyway!
  • Price: At the time of writing theSony Xperia Zis priced at Rs 32100/-, with the Samsung galaxy S4priced at Rs35000/-. It must be considered that the Xperia Z was released a fair few months before the S4, naturally the Xperia Z has been reduced in price over time since launch as I’m sure so will the Samsung Galaxy S4
  • Software: The software is quite exactly a matter of first choice, both run android 4.2. Both are comfortable to use, speedy and good looking. I do think that the S4 does come with a few too many out of the box applications that Samsung have decided you need.

Verdict: After spending some time with both devices it is still as hard to separate them as much as to glance at their specification sheets. I think the Xperia Z looks great than the Samsung Galaxy S4 but the S4 is more comfortable to hold in-hand. The advantage the Galaxy S4 has with the processor is more than compensated for by Sony in the Camera and screen. One of the benefits to the Galaxy S4 is the fact that it does have a removable battery, but hey. Some of the features on the Samsung would be used very rarely so if that’s your thing then the Samsung Galaxy S4 is the one for you.
