Warangal was the capital city of Kakatiya kings. It was called ‘Orugallu’ at that time. There are many historical monuments in Warangal which are of tourist interest. There are the famous Warangal temple, thousand pillars temple and Swamyambhu temple to name a few. Warangal is given the status of World Heritage City by UNESCO.

 

Many tourists, not only from India but from other countries also visit Warangal. There are many places of interest for tourist and the most important of all these is the Warangal Fort. The pillars and arches in the fort are famous for intricate carvings. There are also the temples of Swaymabhudevi, Bhudevi temples in the fort. Other attractions in Warangal are the Bhadrakali temple and thousand pillar temples. Pakhal Lake, Eturunagaram also attract the visitors.

 

What to see in Warangal

  • Warangal Fort: Built by Kakatiya rulers in 13th century, this fort is in ruins now. The gateway is one of the most popular structure as well as the pillars.
  • Pakhal Lake: The Lake is situated in the forest and it is a man made lake. This is also believed to be built by Ganaptidev, the Kakatiya king.
  • Pakhal Wild Life Sanctuary: This sanctuary houses leopards, bears and tigers. The Pakhal Lake and the forest form the Sanctuary which covers an area of around 839 square meters.
  • Thousand Pillared temple: This is situated on a hill on Hanmakonda-Warangal highway. This was constructed in the year 1163 by King Rudra Dev. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is constructed in the shape of a star.

  • Eturnagaram Wildlife Sanctuary: This is located at a distance of 108 kilometers from Warangal. It is the home for many tigers, leopards, jackals, Nilgai, Sambar, Wolves, Python, cobra, Star and also many kinds of birds.
  • Ramappa Temple: Ramappa temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. This is at a distance of 77 kms from Warangal.

Best time to visit Warangal: Tourists can make a plan to visit Warangal during October to March months. This is the best time to visit Warangal as the climate will be pleasant during this period.

 

Getting to Warangal: Warangal is well connected by road and rail to major cities in India. Warangal is one of the major railway junctions. Buses from several cities such as Hyderabad, Tirupati, Chennai, Bangalore and other states travel to and from Warangal daily. Nearest airport is Hyderabad. Buses and autos will be available to go around in the city.
