ACC Approves Appointment of Gurdeep Singh as CMD of NTPC
29.1.2016: Appointments committee of the cabinet approved appointment of Gurdeep Singh as the chairman and managing director of NTPC. He succeeds Arup Roy Choudhury who completed his term in August 2015. The post is vacant since then. Gurdeep Singh will be in this post for five years from the date he takes charge.
JS Deepak is the new Telecom Secretary
29.1.2016: JS Deepak is appointed as the new Telecom secretary. He is presently serving as Secretary, Department of IT. He belongs to UP cadre officer 1982 batch. This is the second time that he will serve Department of Communication. He succeeds Rakesh Garg who is now moved to Minority Affairs Ministry. Deepak played a key role in ensuring smooth auction of 3G as Joint Secretary, DoT. The auction fetched 1.06 lakh crore rupees revenue for the government.
Another Title for Sania, Martina Hingis Duo
29.1.2016: Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis won another women’s doubles title. This time it is Australian Open Title for the duo who made winning their habit. The pair defeated Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka 7-6, 6-3 in the final match that is played at Melbourne, Australia. This is the first Australian open title for the pair and third successive grand slam title since winning Wimbledon and US open in 2015.
Graham Ford is the Chief Coach of Sri Lanka
29.1.2016: Sri Lanka is going to play three matches T20 international series against India in February. Ahead of the tour, Graham Ford is named as the chief coach. He succeeds Marvan Atapattu who stepped down five months ago. This is the second time that Ford will coach the Sri Lanka team. He was the coach of the team in 2012 also.
Akash Missile Test Fired Successfully
29.1.2016: India successfully test fired Akash Missile from Chandipuri in Orissa. Indian Air Force personnel carried out three rounds of tests as part or user trail mission. Akash Missile is built indigenously and this is a surface to air missile.
