M K Surana as the new Chairman

16.10.2015: HPCL, India’s third largest oil company appointed M K Surana as the new chairman and managing director.  Surana is 53 and is serving as CEO of Prize Petroleum Co Ltd. He will succeed Nishi Vasudev as the CEO. Nishi is going to retire in March next year. Surana was selected after twelve candidates were interviewed who include P K Joshi of HPCL and Khaleel Rahim of STC.

Edinburgh University Awarded Honorary Doctorate to Shah Rukh Khan

16.10.2015: Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan was given honorary doctorate by University of Edinburgh, Scotland.  He received the degree of doctor honoris Causa from the chancellor of the university.  Shah Rukh Khan, 49 years old acted in more than eight films.  The honorary doctorate is awarded to him recognizing his charitable work that includes creating children’s ward, solar power to rural villages in India and so on.

Maggi Instant Noodles to be Back in the Market Soon

16.10.2015: Nestle announced that Maggi instant noodles may soon be back into the Indian market as the samples have cleared tests conducted by laboratories.  Maggi was banned in India as they have excess lead.

16th October is Observed as World Food Day

16.10.2015: Sixteenth October of every year is observed as World Food Day.  This year theme of World Food Day is “Social protection and agriculture”. This is to raise public awareness and to encourage people to fight against hunger.  Food and Agriculture Organization said that agriculture production must increase by 60% in the world to meet food demand. World Food Week was observed from 12th October to 16th October, 2015.

Dr Kalam’s Birth Place Included in AMRUT

16.10.2015: M Venkaiah Naidu, union minister of Urban Development announced that Dr Abdul Kalam’s birth place Rameswaram is included in Atal mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation –AMRUT. Till now 498 places are included in the mission.  A memorial is going to be built in Rameswaram details of which will be worked out by a committee consisting of Venkaiah Naidu, Ron Radhakrishnan and N Gopalaswamy.
