New chief Election Commissioner of India is Nasim Zaidi

09.04.2015: President of India Pranab Mukherjee approved the appointment of Nasim Zaidi as the new chief election commissioner of India. He is taking charge in place of Harishankar Brahma who is going to retire on 18th of this month. Nasim Zaidi belongs to 1976 IAS officers’ batch and served in Civil Aviation Ministry for a long time. His tenure as chief election commissioner of India will be till July 2017.

Gopaldas Neeraj and Uday Pratap Singh Conferred Sahitya Shiromani Samman

09.04.2015: Uttar Pradesh government conferred the Sahitya Shiromani Samman to poet Gopaldas Neeraj and Hindi Litterateur Uday Pratap Singh. The award carries 21 lakh rupees. The award is conferred by Akhil Yadav, chief minister of Uttar Pradesh.

Jnanpith Awardee Jayakanth, Tamil Writer is No More

09.04.2015: Jnanpith Award winner and renowned Tamil writer Jayakanth breathed his last Chennai due to prolonged illness. He is 81 and is survived by wife, son and daughters. He penned more than 35 novels, short stories and autobiographies. He also composed poems.

Veteran Singer EM Hanifa Passed Away

09.04.2015: Noted singer EM Hanifa passed away in Chennai at the age of 97. He lent his voice for many religious songs including the evergreen song Iraivanidam Kaiyenthungal which is liked by people of all religions. In 2002 he contested as DMK candidate for lost the election.

Saina Nehwal Dropped to World No. 2 Rank

09.04.2015: Saina Nehwal dropped to 2nd rank in world badminton ranking just a week after she attained the number one position. Saina was the first woman from India to achieve this feat. She defeated Carolina Marin at All England recently and won the India Open title in March that helped her attain the number one rank.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 9 Day Foreign Tour

09.04.2015: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a foreign tour for nine days during which he will visit France, Germany and Canada. He will have a meeting with French President Francois Hollande. He will reach Germany on Sunday and Canada on Tuesday. His agenda is investments, space programme, defence, infrastructure and others.
