FIFA World Cup 2014: Defending Champion Spain Knocked Out of World Cup Tourney

Defending champion Spain crashed out of FIFA world cup 2014 in the first round itself. Spain lost to Chile in a group match by 0-2. With the defeat of Spain, Netherlands and Chile qualified for knock out stage from Group B.

Reo-De-Janeiro: Defending champion Spain is knocked out of FIFA World Cup 2014. Spain was defeated by Netherlands in the first match and lost another match to Chile. Spain needed to at least draw the match to keep the knock out hopes alive. Chile defeated the champion 2-0.

Brazil, France and Italy teams were the defending champion who were crashed out of world cup tourney in 1966, 2002 and 2010 in the first round itself. Chile and Netherlands are the first teams to reach knockout stage of world cup 2014 with two wins each. Spain and Australia are out of the tourney with two loses. Another match will be played between Spain and Australia on June 23 but the match now will not have any importance. Netherlands and Chile will also play a match on the same day, competing for the first position in the group.

From the beginning Chile played attackingly and Spain’s defense appeared weak. Spain finished the match without scoring any goads. Chile took revenge on Spain which defeated them in a group match in the last world cup. This is the first victor for Chile over Spain in the last eleven matches. Spain won a world cup and two Euro cups between 2008 and 2014.

It is not uncommon to see great teams losing but fans got a doubt whether this is the defending champion or not when they saw Spain playing the match against Chile. No player in the team seems to have any desire to win the match. Selectors chose the go for the tourney with the players who already represented the country without giving any chance to young players and this proved to be a wrong decision. Chile played as if it is their last match and did not let Spain even took a breath. Chile is likely to play with Brazil in the second round and if they continue to play like this, the team may defeat Brazil also.
