YSRCP: Its Strengths And Weaknesses

YSRCP is one of the strong regional parties playing major role in Seemandha region of AP. In light of the ensuing elections, its strengths and weaknesses are analyzed.

Vijayawada: YSR has been famous as one of the strongest CM’s AP had. During the years 2004-2009 he had been the CM and he had good rapport with congress high command. He was instrumental in bringing back congress to power in 2009. His death in 2009 changed the political scenario of this state.

Before completing the last rituals for late YSR, the total 150+ MLA’s from congress were made to sign a declaration to congress high command to make YS Jagan as the CM. Congress high command refused this declaration and subsequently all the MLA’s backed out leaving Jagan alone. Congress high command acted tough against Jagan.

Jagan wanted to conduct ‘odarpu yatra’ to console the fans of YSR who gave their lives (being unable to absorb information about YSR’s death). Congress did not permit. Jagan revolted against congress high command and started his own political party in the name and style of YSR Congress Party.

He got elected as an MP on this new party ticket from Kadapa Lok Sabha with thumping majority. Subsequently many of the existing MLA’s &MP’s from congress resigned and joined YSRCP. All those migrants got re-elected to retain their existing seats.

Meanwhile the scams involving YS Jagan came to light. CBI filed many charge sheets in many of the scams (that took place during YSR regime). Jagan’s name appeared in many of the charge sheets as accused and he was arrested. After spending nearly 16 months in jail, Jagan came out on bail.

During T-movement, YSRCP gave letter to central government ‘to go ahead with T-formation as per Article 3 of constitution of India’. But when the congress decided to give Telangana, Jagan objected to the proposal and started slogan of ‘United AP’. Congress went ahead and got the T-bill cleared in parliament.

Post T-formation, many congress leaders found themselves un-acceptable to their voters in Seemandhra region and hence naturally migrated to other parties and many of them landed in YSRCP.

After winning all the re-elections (to retain the existing seats), now it is for the YSRCP to show its real strength in the ensuing elections where it is contesting on its own.

The party has strength in terms of new inflows from other parties and weaknesses in terms of corruption cases against YS Jagan. Incidentally, YSRCP has nil presence in Telangana and it can show its strength only in Seemandhra region where the elections are scheduled to be conducted on 7th May 2014(both for Assembly & Lok Sabha). The party is required to show its majority in terms of 119 MLA & 25 MP seats.
