Elections 2014: Credibility Is The Main Issue

The present elections have one important issue that the credibility of various leaders and their poll promises.

New Delhi: Elections comprise of many components and one out of them is the poll promises. These promises are presented in the form of election manifesto. If the people are to believe the manifesto and vote accordingly, the manifesto publisher (the party and its chief) need to have some credibility.

Credibility is a yardstick whereby the words and deeds of one person/organization get measured and credibility level is fixed.

In the present elections, credibility of many political parties and the leaders is discussed at length.

The ruling congress released its manifesto. The contents of the manifesto for 2014 are the reproduction of its earlier manifestos and the takers for the same are lesser in number.

The main opposition BJP also released its manifesto. The main contents of the manifesto included ‘Gujarat model development’ and involvement of information & technology for reduction of corruption in government activities. As the party has been able to showcase their growth in the state of Gujarat, the BJP manifesto is well accepted and has more takers.

In the new state of Telangana, the TRS released its manifesto. TRS chief KCR declared many times (during T-movement) that TRS would merge with congress once the state is formed. On T-bill clearance in parliament, KCR went back on his words and he is now contesting the elections on his own without any alliance form congress.

Jagan of YSRCP also released his party’s manifesto. Since Jagan is facing many cases on account of financial irregularities including money laundering, the credibility of Jagan is a big question mark. Above all, Jagan’s election affidavit mentioned his assets are worth only Rs.431 crores. Based on the charge sheets filed by CBI against Jagan, the illegal wealth accumulation by Jagan stood at around 100000 crores of rupees. As such his election affidavit that his assets are valued at Rs.431 crores once again faces the credibility issue.

TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu also released his manifesto wherein the main contents are, in addition to populous measures, development of new capital in addition to all-round development. Naidu shown his performance earlier and he could attract world IT leader Mcirosoft and could ensure visit of other world toppers including Bill Clinton’s visit. All these acts add to the credibility of Naidu. Naidu’s earlier term (1995 to 2004) has on record, stating many actions of Naidu in contra to his poll promises at that time. This is a factor that can influence the credibility of Naidu and his manifesto.
