Sequels And Remakes: En-cashing The Original Popularity

Once a film becomes hit/super hit, the same popularity is being en-cashed by making remake/sequel of the same.

Mumbai: Sequels & remakes are the two options for en-cashing the popularity enjoyed by original movie. This trend continues in all movies (starting from Hollywood to Bollywood to Tollywood to Kollywood).

The original story needs to be accepted by the audience and there are many persons continuously looking for opportunity to en-cash the popularity of the original release.

“Don” starring Amitabh Bachhan & Zeenath Aman has been a grand success. The remakes have tailor-made changes to the original story to suit local nativity. Most of the remakes also have been marked hit. To continue the trend, Don2 by Shahrukh Khan was also made with Priyanka Chopra & Lara Dutta in the lead roles. The guest role by Kareena Kapoor was similar to that of Helen in original Don (of Amitabh).

Another all time hit “Sholay” has been re-made using latest technical advancements and the re-make could not get as much popularity as that of original Sholay.

“Ram Aur Shyam” by Dilip Kumar is a story of twin brothers. One of them smooth and another rough. The Hema Malini, Dharmendra & Sanjeev Kumar starrer Seeta Aur Geeta also has similar story. This film has remakes form other regional languages (Tollywood has ‘Bullemma Bullodu’ starring Chalam, ‘Ganga Manga’ with Vanisri in lead roles).

Tollywood’s all-time technical icon Mayabazar has an all together different story. The movie having base story line from Mahabharat epic has been very well received by the audience. The casting by NTR, ANR, SVR, Savitri all added to the weight of the movie. The photography and music have been marked ‘simply superb’ by audience. This movie attracts audience of all ages even after 40 years of its making. This film has been re-made with latest technical advancement but the re-make could not get the success range as that of the original.

Sequel is another marketing point for en-cashing the popularity. Hollywood’s Rocky (starring Stallone) has sequels namely Rocky 1, Rocky II, Rocky III, Rocky IV & Rocky V. Another erotic thriller by Sharon Stone ‘Basic Instinct’ has got sequel in Basic Instinct 2 which could get lesser popularity compared to the original. Dhoom has sequels like Dhoom2, Dhoom 3 etc. Tollywood has sequels for Money (by Ramgopal Verma) in the form of Money Money (by RGV) & Money Money and More Money (by JD Chakravarty). Now sequel for Amitabh & Sridevi’s Khudah Gawah is also being planned.

Ready market is found inform of remake and sequel to en-cash the popularity of the original movie.
