2014 Lok Sabha Elections: Final Decision on Narendra Modi’s Seat on March 13

BJP high command and RSS are backing the candidature of Narendra Modi for Varanasi seat. However Murali Manohar Joshi, the sitting MP is reluctant to leave the seat. A Final decision will be taken in the meeting on March 13.

Lucknow: It is not yet clear whether the prime minister candidate of BJP, Narendra Modi will contest from Varanasi or Lucknow constituency. But the issue made out of it is showing the difference among different generations in the party. There is an argument that BJP president Rajnath Singh is trying to keep away leaders who are more than 70 years of age and give chance to younger leaders.

Presently Rajnath is representing Ghaziabad constituency and is doubtful about retaining the seat in the coming election and is looking for an alternate seat. He wants to contest from Lucknow seat which is presently represented by Lalji Tandon who is close to party senior leader Vajpayee. He announced that he will not sacrifice his seat for anyone except Narendra Modi.

Amit Shah, who is very close to Narendra Modi, took charge as Uttar pradesh Party affairs in charge in May 2013. Amit Shah wanted Modi to contest from Varanasi so that it will positively influence the voters not only in east UP but also the nearby Bihar and Jharkhand states. Sitting MP of Varanasi is Murali Manohar Joshi and he announced that he will obey the decision of the high command. But it is an open secret that he is not ready to make this sacrifice.

BJP high command suggested that Modi should be made to contest from Lucknow. But Amit Shah proposed that Joshi will be given the Kanpur ticket. Modi wants the older generation of leaders to go as Rajya Sabha members and give way to the new generation leaders. But the senior members of the part are not ready for this. BJP central election committee is meeting on March 13 to decide the third list of Lok Sabha candidates and a clarification can be expected on that day.

Meanwhile RSS is backing the candidature of Modi from Varanasi Constituency. BJP has strong hold in Western and eastern UP and if Modi contests from eastern UP, the poll prospects in other neighboring states will also boost, says political analysts
