January 2014 Had Mixed Performance Reported By Leading Car Makers From India

Reeling under a prolonged slump, the Indian auto market could not give better reports. The leading companies like Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Toyota & Tata reported decline in domestic sales in January 2014.

New Delhi: Leading Indian car makers Maruti Suzuki India, Hyundai Motor India, Toyota Kirloskar Motor and Tata Motors reported decline in domestic sales in January 2o14. The immediate reason for this decline can be associated with the prolonged slump that the auto market continues to reel under.

Details of sales from Maruti indicate that the dip in sales was to the tune of 6.4 to 96,569 (against 103026 in January 2013). The company’s mini segment cars, including M800, Alto, A-Star and WagonR, slipped 17 per cent to 38,565 units. Sales of its utility vehicles, including Gypsy, Grand Vitara and Ertiga, also fell 21.9 per cent to 4,763 units last month, thus affecting the company’s performance.

Hyundai Motor India Ltd reported sales at 33,405 units against 34,302 units (down by 2.6%)

Mahindra & Mahindra’s domestic sales stood at 40,324 units as against 47,841 (down by 15.71%)

Toyota reported sale of 10,910 units (down by 18.14%)

Tata Motors reported sales of 40,481 units (down by 34%)

However, the good news is that Ford India and Honda Cars India posted double digit growth during the month (most probably riding on the success of their new launches). Honda Cars India Limited posted nearly 3-fold increase in its domestic sales at 15,714 units, this being highest ever monthly sales in January.

Indian Auto Industry is projecting very high hopes on the Indian Auto Expo 2014 to be held at Greater Noida during 5-11 February 2014.
