Sony’s QX Camera for Tablets: QX Lens is Detachable has Micro SD Card

Tablet photography is about to undergo revolutionary changes if Sony’s latest plan is anything to go by. The company will allow tablet users to mount its QX lenses behind their slates for taking pictures. Sony’s SPA TA1 will act as a mount that is placed behind the tablet like Xperia Z or Vaio Tap 11. QX lens is then placed on the mount for high quality photography that will appear on the tablet’s large screen.

New York: The adapter will allow use of the QX100 camera lens for example which has a 20-megapixel sensor, 3.6x zoom and Zeiss optics. The lens adapter will be released only in Japan for a start. There is no word of it going for sale in the UK or US as yet, though its tentative price is put at 22pounds. How far this additional device on the tablet will be advantageous to the user remains to be seen. For some it might prove a weighty problem.

Sony QX100 is of a higher quality of the two lens-type cameras announced by it at IFA 2013. Derived from the Cyber-shot RX100 II, the QX100 has a Zeiss glass which means good quality. The lens is designed to enhance the photographic possibilities of a smart phone. There is a clip at the back of the lens with jaws to attach it to the back of the phone.

The lens itself is detachable, with a zoom toggle, shutter button and front control ring, all of which functions enable easy clicking while viewing the smart phone. The body of the lens accommodates a battery at the rear and a micro SD card for storage. There is a micro USB for charging as well as a screw thread for fixing on a tripod. The QX100 lens is NFC enabled. It works well with the Sony Xperia Z and SonyPlay Memories Mobile app which is the interface one has to use for QX100 lens. The lens can be used with iPhone and Kindle.

When it was first introduced on smart phones, the Sony QX100 got a lukewarm response. Who would want to give up solid cameras for good quality pictures for an additional device on the Smart Phone. Moreover, the Smart Phone is easy to carry without an attachment. But with Sony wanting to revive its pet QX100 lens on tablets, it is a wait and watch situation for now.
