Senior Tollywood Actress Anjali Devi Died in Chennai

Senior Tollywood actress Anjali Devi died in a private hospital in Chennai today due to ill health. She was 86. She was not well and was being treated in a hospital since one week. She was popular as silver screen Sita Devi.

Chennai: Anjali Devi was born on 24th August, 1928 in Peddapuram in East Godavari district. Her real name was Anjani Kumari. Her organs were donated to Ramachandra Medical hospital in Chennai.

Anjali Devi is survived by two sons. The name Anjali Devi reminds us of the roles she played in mythological films. she played many characters such as Anarkali and Sita and so on. She played opposite almost all the top heroes of yester years. She played as heroine to Akkineni Nageswara Rao and NTR and also acted as their mother in some films. she was introduced to Tollywood with the movie Gollabhama. She married famous music director Adi Narayanarao. Her role as Sita in the movie ‘Lava Kusa’ was appreciated by the audience. She also acted in many movies including Suvarna Sundari, Anarkali, Keelu Gurram, Bhakta Tukaram, Badi Pantulu, Chenchu Lakshmi.

Anjali Devi also acted in 28 Hindi movies. She produced 27 films. she was awarded Filmfare award for her role in Anarkali in 1955. In 1957 also she won the Film Fare award as best actress for her film Suvarna Sundari in 1957; for Chenchu Lakshmi in 1958 and for Jayabheri movie in 1959.

Other awards Anjali Devi won were Raghupati Venkaiah Naidu award in 2005, Ramineni award in 2006, prestigious Akkineni Nagaeswara Rao Award in 2008. The last film Anjali Devi acted was ‘Police Alludu’ in 1994.

Anjali Devi produced films under her own banner ‘Anjali Pictures’ and made Telugu, Tamil and Hindi languages. After retiring as heroine she did many character roles. Tamil Nadu government honoured her with awards such as Natana Siromani, Kalai Selvi and Lifetime achievement awards.

Body of Anjali Devi is now taken to Ramachandra Hospital as she donated her organs. On Wednesday he body will be taken to her residence and last rites will be performed on the same day.
