Lakshmi Kantam, Director of IICT, Won Vasvik Research Award

17.12.2013: In the category of women scientist, Lakshmi Kantam, Director of IICT (Indian Institute of Chemical Technology), Won Vasvik Research Award for 2011. Along with citation she was also received Rs.1 lakh cash prize. Her work developed Catalysts. Their applications helped in innovative green processes for fine and bulk chemicals. She received Chandaben Mohanbhai Patel Industrial Research Award. This is one of the 8 awards of Vasvik Awards. These awards were instituted by Bajaj Group of Industries.

Next Chairman of Karnataka State Human Rights Commission is Darmar Murugensan

17.12.2013: Next Chairman of Karnataka State Human Rights Commission is Darmar Murugensan. Earlier he acted as Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court. From past 18 months this post is vacant. Earlier SR Nayak former Karnataka High court Judge was in this place. Currently he is acting as member in National Human Rights Commission.

Itihas Ratna was awarded to Eminent Historian Bipan Chandra

17.12.2013: Asiatic Society Bihar has awarded Itihas Ratna to Eminent Historian Bipan Chandra. This award was given to him on his 86th birthday. Award presented to him by OP Jaiswal. He is the secretary of the Asiatic Society of Bihar in the Jawaharlal Nehru University Campus New Delhi. Bipan is the 4th person to receive this award. Other person who received this award were JS Grewal (9th September 2012), Irfan Habib (9th September 2011), Ram Sharan Sharma (19th November 2010).

Lokpal Bill passed in Rajya Sabha

17.12.2013: From past two years Lokpal and Lokayuktas Bills were pending in Rajya Sabha. Today after the debate of 5 hours, these two bills were approved by voice of vote. These bills were already passed in Lok Sabha in 2011 December.

Angela Merkel was elected as German Chancellor

17.12.2013: For the third time, Angela Merkel was elected as German Chancellor. Her right left government faces a host of challenges including seeing through Merkel’s costly switch from nuclear to renewable energy and bedding down European reforms aimed at shielding the bloc from future crises.

South India’s High altitude Cricket stadium inaugurated

17.12.2013: South India’s High altitude Cricket stadium inaugurated. This is located at Krishnagiri in Waynad district, Kerala. Nikhil Kumar, Kerala Governor inaugurated this stadium. This is the second high altitude cricket stadium in India. First one is Dharmasala Stadium. For the constructions of this stadium, Kerala government spent Rs.6.5 crores. Area occupied is 4.4 hectares. It is situated 2800feet above the sea level.

National Energy Conservation Award 2013 achieved by Poovar Island Resort

17.12.2013: National Energy Conservation Award 2013 achieved by Poovar Island Resort. This award was received by MR Narayanan, Managing Director of the resort. This was presented by Pranab Mukherjee, President. Award was received for saving energy.

An Agreement between India and Arab League

17.12.2013: To elevate the political, trade and cultural relations, an agreement was made between India and Arab League. MoU was signed by Nabil Elaraby, Secretary General of the League of Arab States and Salman Khurshid, External Affairs Minister of India.

Rann Utsav Celebrates between 17th December 2013 to 14th February 2014

17.12.2013: Two months long cultural festival of Gujarat Started on 17th December 2013. This will celebrate till 14th February 2014. It was inaugurated by Gujarat Tourism Minister Saurabh Patel at Kutch in Gujarat. This festival started in 2005. International tourists rush is huge at this festival along with domestic tourist.

17.12.2013: Government’s Prior Sanction is not required to Probe a Public Servant as per the Supreme Court rule. Under the surveillance of the court, probe is being conducted by the CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation).

Raymond Limited achieved National Energy Conservation Award

17.12.2013: Along with Poovar Island Resort, Raymond Limited also achieved National Energy Conservation Award 2013. This was undertaken by Vapi manufacturing plant in Gujarat. Award was received by Harish Chatterjee, Vice President – Manufacturing Textiles division. Raymond won this award for reducing its specific consumption of Electrical energy and thermal energy when compared with last year. This award was received by the company for 6 times.
