Mumbai: Yash Chopra, Bollywood director of many romantic films breathed his last in Mumbai, Lilavati Hospital today. He was 80. Yash Chopra has been taking treatment for Dengue fever in Lilavati hospital.

Yash Chopra recently celebrated his 80th birthday and said that his latest film Jab Tak Hai Jaan could be his last film. The film stars Shah Rukh Khan, Anushka Sharma and Katrina Kaif. Jab Tak Hai Jaan may be released on Diwali festival.

Yash Chopra was admitted into Lilavati hospital 20th October, 2012 and he was being observed by the doctors. The spokesperson of Yash Chopra has said that his condition has improved and he may be discharged soon.

Bollywood’s best romantic films were such as Kabhi Kabhi, Chandni, Silsila and Lamhe were directed by Yash Chopra. He has also directed action films such as Trishul and Deewar. Jab Tak Hai Jaan that is to be released on Diwali is the last film directed by him.

Yash Chopra directed his first film in the year 1959. Name of the film was Dhool ka Phool. His next venture was Dharmapurta in the year 1961. Yash Chopra then launched his own production company Yash Raj Films. First film made on his banner was Daag in the year 1973.

Yash Chopra said he was encouraged to become a director by Meena Kumari but Vyjayanthimala advised him to concentrate on becoming a director. After Veer Zara, he is directing Jab Tak Hai Jaan almost after eight years.

A song is due to be shot in Swiss Alps in the film Jab Tak Hai Jaan and Chopra cancelled his trip since he had to be admitted into the Hospital. He was survived by his wife and two some Aditya and Uday.

Yash Chopra was awarded Padma Bhushan in the year 2005. In 2001, he was given Dr. Dadabhai Naoroji Millennium Lifetime achievement award. In the same year he was awarded the highest honor of Indian Film Industry, Dadasaheb Phalke award. For his contribution to Hindi cinema and for his achievements, Maharashtra government has given him Raj Kapoor Award and the Shantaram award. In 2006, he was given the Lifetime Achievement award at 4th Pune International Film Festival. Madhya Pradesh government has given him the Kishore Kumar award.

Yash Chopra’s movie Dil to Pagal Hai was given the 1998 best popular film National award in wholesome entertainment category. Other films that were given awards were Waqt, Ittefaq, Daag, Deewar, Lamhe, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Dil to Pagal Hai, Veer Zaara were given the Film fare awards.
